Why Do You Act White.
Not Good Enough.
Every year at UF, they build a wall in the plaza. A brick wall, and each brick is painted with a word that someone has called them. A wall of hatred, built ten feet high with words.
I walked by the wall every day on my way to class. Looking away, because I know words are power and I felt them stabbing me every time.
The wall was up for a week, and today, they tore it down. There was a speech, there was a performance, there was a crowd of hundreds of students. And then thirty or so of them grabbed hold of the ropes holding it up
and down it fell with an enormous, final BOOM. I assume afterwards they smashed up the bricks with hammers. But I was trying to hold in tears so I didn’t see.
They say people will forget what you say but they will never forget what you made them feel.
Sometimes, they won’t forget either one, and those words will haunt them forever.
Be kind. Be courteous. Think with your heart before you speak. You just may be saving someone’s life.
